What is Qi in acupuncture?

There are many kinds of qi sensations, and the practice of qigong and acupuncture will produce different types of qi sensations. Several common types of qi sensations are listed below for reference.

  1. Ant movement: a sensation of qi moving through the finer meridians on the surface of the skin. This sensation is like ants crawling on top of one's skin and can feel itchy.

  2. Creeping: a sensation of Qi moving over the thicker meridians, a sensation as if earthworms are slowly wriggling.

  3. Warmth: Qi causes a great increase in cellular activity, causing the body temperature to rise slightly, and the feeling of warmth. There is also another situation where Qi passing through the Governor's Vessel will produce a warm feeling.

  4. Coolness: If the cells are overly excited, Qi will also suppress the abnormalities of the cells and make them feel cool. There is also another situation where Qi passing through the Conception  Vessel will produce a cooling sensation.

  5. Tingling: This is caused by the magnetic effect of the movement of Qi and feels tingling, or in better cases, tingling.

  6. Expansion: When more Qi is accumulated, there will be a feeling of expansion.

  7. Tightening: When the Qi starts to concentrate, there will be a tightening sensation.

  8. Needle prick: The feeling that good Qi has begun to force out the needle type of sick Qi.

  9. Beating: The sensation of Qi accumulating into a mass and moving through the muscles or meridians. Also divided into the jumping of acupuncture points ( vertical jumping ), and the jumping of meridians and muscles ( horizontal jumping ).

  10. Numbing electricity: This is the effect of the electric field generated by the operation of qi, and the feeling of a weak body static electricity.

  11. Floating: Qi becomes lighter and moves upward, and there is a feeling of floating.

  12. Heavy: When the Qi becomes heavier and moves downward, there is a feeling of heaviness.

  13. Soreness: The feeling that good qi has begun to force out acidic sick qi.

  14. Light and peaceful: When clear qi has spread throughout the body, there is a feeling of lightness and peacefulness.

  15. Infiltration: The feeling that Qi has penetrated into the inner layers of the skin.

  16. Penetration: The feeling that larger strands of qi have penetrated into the skin.

  17. Water flow: The sensation of larger strands of Qi moving through the meridians or blood vessels, as if water is flowing.

  18. Drops of wax oil: The sensation of Qi moving through the meridians in the head as if a candle is melting and wax oil is moving from the top of the head to the cheeks.

  19. Bone heat: The warm flow of qi has entered the bones, and it feels very comfortable with the heat inside the bones.

  20. Trembling: Different kinds of qi have resonated in the body, while making the cells tremble.

  21. Fast electricity: Qi drives the atoms inside the cells, so that the electrons inside the atoms gain energy to break away from the bondage of the nucleus and become free electrons, forming multiple streams of electrons that go around each other in the whole body at a very fast speed, which is the most comfortable state to open the meridians and tendons of the whole body in a moment. This is the feeling of fast electric current.

  22. Infused: There are many acupuncture points open at the top of the head and both shoulders, and the whole strand of good Qi in the void enters from the open acupuncture points, which feels like being infused.

  23. Melting: The acupuncture points all over the body are opened, the qi of the body merges with the qi of the void, and it feels as if the body is melted.

  24. Dancing: The qi makes the tendons and bones of the whole body active, so that one feels involuntarily that the hands and feet have to dance.

  25. Massage: Qi enters the internal organs, making the internal organs of the body feel like they are being massaged.

  26. Twitching: Qi in the body has been able to contract and release, producing the feeling of muscle twitching.

  27. Dan(a Taoist construct of highly concentrated internal energy source) moving: The feeling that the qi has formed a living dan and the living dan has started to operate.

  28. Spiritual movement: Qi has entered the spiritual body, making the spiritual body active, and the whole body becomes a spiritual movement phenomenon.

  29. Light moving: Qi has transformed into light, and light resonates with light, giving the feeling that light is moving.
